Russia fired six missiles from the Black Sea, with four hitting the base and two being intercepted and destroyed before hitting the target in western Ukraine, regional governor Maxim Kozitsky said in a video post.

“At about 4 a.m., a military object situated in Yavoriv District was hit with a missile strike," Kozitsky said, as quoted by the ukrinform.net website.

He added: "According to the preliminary data, the West Air Force Command shot down two missiles. Sadly, four missiles struck the target."

In March, a Russian missile attack on Ukraine’s Yavoriv base near the western city of Lviv killed 35 people and wounded at least 130, according to Ukrainian officials, the Reuters news agency reported.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the time condemned the Russian attack on the Ukrainian military centre near the border with NATO member Poland.
