Maciej Wąsik confirmed the effort was under way in an interview with Polish Radio on Thursday

He told the Polish public broadcaster that firefighters were "checking whether the bomb shelters are fit for use and sufficiently equipped.”

Wąsik revealed that "so far, a review of bomb shelters in the Warsaw area found they were in a poor state.”

He said in the interview that funds "will be made available to upgrade such facilities."

He added that the government would seek to raise public awareness “to make sure everyone knows where the nearest bomb shelter is.”

Earlier this week, Wąsik said there were 62,000 such facilities across the country.

‘Poland is a safe country’

Wąsik reiterated that Poland was "not under threat."

Earlier this week, he stated: “We are in NATO, we are a part of the European Union. We are not a participant in this war although we are providing strong support to Ukraine, but Poland is a safe country.”

He told the media at the time that the authorities were preparing the country “for the worst-case scenario" although “the likelihood of it happening is slim.”

Wąsik also said that the process of checking bomb shelters was “a routine procedure” that had been “planned some time ago” and would “last two months.”

Russia this week carried out a massive bombardment of civilian targets across Ukraine.

Friday is day 233 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
