Poland’s Mateusz Morawiecki and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky held talks after the Ukrainian head of state addressed the leaders of the 27 EU countries earlier in the day.
Zelensky arrived in Brussels as a special guest of the extraordinary EU summit and also delivered a speech to the European Parliament.
He called for further military assistance, including modern fighter jets, to help his country repel the Russian invasion.
Meanwhile, the Polish PM said NATO must act together on jets for Ukraine, the Reuters news agency reported.
'Allies and friends'
Morawiecki took to social media to announce his meeting with Ukraine’s wartime leader, posting a photo and adding in a tweet: “Allies and friends. Thank you President Zelensky for the meeting.”
Meanwhile, the PM’s Office tweeted in Polish: “Russia is an aggressor. We have been warning about its imperialism for years. That’s why Poland was the first to stand on the side of Ukraine and show that this is a war for the future of Europe and the freedom of the world.”
Earlier, the Polish PM also took part in a meeting of a number of fellow EU countries, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain and Sweden, with Zelensky, and held bilateral talks with Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte, among other meetings, the PAP news agency reported.
Thursday is day 351 of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
