Poland's Mateusz Morawiecki and Sweden's Ulf Kristersson are also expected to talk about bilateral relations, European Union affairs and preparations for Sweden’s accession to the NATO alliance, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

In a statement issued before Monday’s talks, the Polish government’s spokesman, Piotr Müller, noted that Sweden was holding the presidency of the EU and coordinating work on a new package of the bloc’s sanctions against Russia. The package was discussed by EU leaders during a summit in Brussels last week.

Müller said: “Enhancing the security of Europe, including Poland, in the context of the Kremlin’s imperial plans, is a priority today. Russia’s war against Ukraine is a war in which the future of our whole continent is being decided. And so from the beginning of Russian aggression, Sweden, just like Poland, has been steadfastly supporting Ukraine.”

Müller added that Sweden had been delivering military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, as well as the equipment necessary to rebuild the country’s power network.

He also noted that Poland and Sweden in May last year jointly organised "a highly successful" donors’ conference that raised funds for humanitarian support to Ukraine.

Following Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, Sweden and Finland applied for membership of NATO.

In his statement, the Polish government spokesman said that “the enlargement of the North Atlantic Alliance to include these two countries is an important step for security in the Baltic Sea region, including for Poland," which was one of the first countries to ratify the move.

Monday is day 355 of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
