Mr Blinken said he was deeply concerned that China may provide Russia with what he referred to as "lethal assistance," the Reuters news agency has reported.

His comments came after a meeting with China’s top diplomat Wang Yi on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

Also, Antony Blinken said he made it clear to Mr Wang that providing military assistance to Russia "would have serious consequences" in the relationship between the United States and China, adding that Washington would soon release more details.

The Saturday meeting marked the first face-to-face engagement by the two superpowers since the US shot down a suspected Chinese spy balloon, sparking a major diplomatic dispute between the two countries.
