US announces $1.2 bn in new security assistance for Ukraine

The United States has announced a new USD 1.2 billion security assistance package for Ukraine's defence against Russia, news outlets have reported.

According to a statement by the US Department of Defense, the new security assistance package includes additional air defense systems and munitions; equipment to integrate Western air defense launchers, missiles, and radars with Ukraine's air defense systems; ammunition for counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems; and 155 mm artillery rounds to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia's invasion.

Washington will also provide Kyiv with commercial satellite imagery services, and support for training, maintenance and sustainment activitiesthe statement said on Tuesday.

'Together we're moving towards a new victory': Ukraine's Zelensky

Ukrainian leader Volodomyr Zelensky has thanked US President Joe Biden for the new defence aid package.

Zelensky said in a tweet that he was "grateful to the US president and the American people for providing Ukraine with a powerful $1.2 billion defense assistance package.

Zelensky added: "We appreciate this sign of solidarity with Ukraine shown on a symbolic day for us – Europe Day and the Day of Victory over Nazism in WWII. Together we're moving towards a new victory."

The United States has committed almost USD 37 billion in security aid to Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February last year, according to officials.

"The United States will continue to work with its Allies and partners to provide Ukraine with capabilities to meet its immediate battlefield needs and longer-term security assistance requirements," the Pentagon said in its statement.

Tuesday is day 440 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
