According to a statement by the US Department of Defense, the new security assistance package includes additional munitions for Patriot air defence systems; HAWK air defence systems and missiles; and 105mm and 203mm artillery rounds to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia's invasion.

Washington will also provide Kyiv with Puma unmanned aerial systems; laser-guided rocket system munitions; and support for training, maintenance and sustainment activities, the statement said on Friday.

'We are getting closer to liberation of Ukrainian land': Zelensky

Ukrainian leader Volodomyr Zelensky has thanked US President Joe Biden for the new defence aid package.

"We appreciate the strong leadership support of Ukraine in our fight against Russian aggression from the American people," Zelensky said in a tweet.

He added: "Amid unprecedented Russian terror and ecocide due to the explosion of the Kakhovka HPP, this is more important than ever. Step by step we are getting closer to the liberation of Ukrainian land."

The United States has committed almost USD 40 billion in security aid to Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February last year, according to officials.

"The United States will continue to work with its Allies and partners to provide Ukraine with capabilities to meet its immediate battlefield needs and longer-term security assistance requirements," the Pentagon said in its statement.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.

Saturday is day 472 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
