The upgrade of the A2 began earlier this week, the biznesalert.pl website has reported.
Authorities will modernise a flyover near the western town of Września and a bridge over the Struga Bawół river near the town of Słupca, also in western Poland, according to the Portal Obronny website.
The Września flyover and the Słupca bridge will be redeveloped and strengthened to allow safe passage by tanks, including the US-made Abrams machines, each of which weighs at least 55 tonnes, biznesalert.pl reported.
US-made Abrams tanks for Poland
On June 28, Poland received the first batch of 14 Abrams main battle tanks from the United States as it bolsters its army in response to Russia’s invasion of neighbouring Ukraine, according to government officials.
It was the first shipment out of a total of 116 modernised M1A1 Abrams machines ordered by Poland in January, news outlets reported.
Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak said two more companies of M1A1 Abrams tanks would arrive later this year, adding up to a battalion, followed by another battalion in 2024, the PAP news agency reported at the time.
Moreover, next year will also see Poland receive the first batch out of 250 M1A2 Abrams tanks, ordered in 2022 and slated for delivery from 2024 to 2026, according to officials.
Poland was the first country in Europe and the first NATO ally after the United States to buy Abrams tanks, the PAP news agency reported.
On June 26, Poland signed an agreement with America's General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS), the manufacturer of the Abrams battle tank, to build a service centre for the machines in the western city of Poznań.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
Friday is day 499 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
