The Kyiv Independent has referred to pressures on journalists not to speak about the negative aspects of the war. In response the paper has published an editorial characterising pressures familiar to journalism in general - not only wartime journalism - as well as the ethical standards they recommend.

The outlet says that in recent months, there has been an increase of pressure - complaints arising when their articles mention topics such as: the difficulties on the front, corruption in the Ukrainian side or simply political disputes on the Ukrainian side:

"While such stories get a lot of appreciation from our readers seeking well-rounded reporting about Ukraine, they also provoke accusations of being “too pessimistic,” publishing “harmful” or “demoralizing” stories, helping Russian propaganda, or even being “infiltrated with Kremlin agents.” The words “clickbait” and “disinformation” get thrown around."

The editorial expresses a clear standard aimed for - journalism should preserve its independence, in particular its right to criticise compatriot politicians or military efforts. The exception mentioned is when reporting could weaken or undermine Ukrainian military strategy or tactics.
