A 6-year-old boy was among those killed, the Reuters news agency reported, citing city military administrator Tymur Tkachenko, who said the overnight attack had caused damage in 27 locations across the city.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the capital was the primary target of the massive attack, which also hit the Dnipro, Poltava, Sumy and Mykolaiv regions.
"The Russians launched more than 300 drones and eight missiles," Zelensky said, adding that "the world once again saw Russia’s response to our desire for peace, shared with America and Europe."
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said in a post: "It's a horrible morning in Kyiv. The brutal Russian strikes destroyed entire residential buildings and damaged schools and hospitals. Civilians are injured and killed. There are still people under the rubble."
He called for international measures to "put maximum pressure on Moscow" and "achieve peace through strength."
Russia has in recent months stepped up air strikes on Ukrainian towns and cities, Reuters reported, noting that US President Donald Trump this week shortened a deadline for his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to make peace.
"President Trump has been very generous and very patient with Putin, trying to find a solution," Sybiha wrote, saying that "it is probably time to reduce to zero all of the timeframes that had been given to Putin to demonstrate a constructive approach."
Sybiha also said that Putin "does not care about any attempts to put an end to the killing" because "the entire existence of this war criminal is based on this senseless war, which he cannot win but refuses to end."
Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.
Thursday is day 1,254 of Russia's war on Ukraine.
