Trump told reporters on Sunday the trip would take place on "Wednesday or Thursday."

Asked how Russia could avoid looming sanctions, he replied: “Yeah, get a deal where people stop getting killed.”

He has threatened "very severe tariffs" if a ceasefire is not reached soon.

Trump said two "nuclear submarines" he redeployed after an online dispute with former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev are now "in the region."

He did not say whether they are nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed, or disclose their locations, news agencies reported.

He recently called Russia’s actions “disgusting” after a deadly strike on Kyiv that killed 31 people, including five children, last Thursday, capping a month of a record 6,297 Russian long-range drone attacks on Ukraine, a 14-fold increase from July last year.

Ukraine expects a US-made Patriot surface-to-air missile system Trump has promised, funded by European allies rather than his administration.

Ukraine has continued its own strikes, with attacks on Sunday killing three people and igniting a refinery fire.

On Monday, a drone hit set a railway station ablaze in Russia’s Volgograd region, the regional administration said.

Russian and Ukrainian officials have met in recent months in Istanbul. The latest talks produced an agreement to exchange 1,200 prisoners, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday.
