Trump spoke with the Hungarian prime minister on Tuesday. Budapest is being seriously weighed as a venue for a Trump–Zelenskiy–Putin summit, Reuters reported, noting Hungary is among the few European locations Putin could visit without fear of arrest.

Orbán maintains close ties with the Russian leader, though it is unclear whether Ukraine would accept Budapest as a host.

The official also mentioned Istanbul, which has previously hosted negotiations over the war in Ukraine.

Switzerland has offered to organize the meeting, and its interior minister has pledged immunity to Putin if talks occurred there. Austria has likewise proposed to host.

Ukraine’s president praised Monday’s White House talks as an “important step” toward ending the war and arranging a three-way meeting with the U.S. and Russian leaders, the agency said.

Reuters added that the mood contrasted with Zelenskiy’s February Oval Office meeting with Trump and close aides, which ended in a political dispute.

Trump said this week that another round of peace talks is being organized and that he is unsure he will attend, adding that a Zelenskiy–Putin meeting would be preferable without him, though he would participate if necessary.
