Radosław Sikorski spoke after talks in Warsaw with Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel on Friday.

He said the two agreed on the "necessity of keeping up pressure on Russia in order to end the war," Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Sikorski, who also serves as a deputy prime minister, said Poland and Portugal share a common understanding of Ukraine’s struggle for sovereignty, shaped by their own histories of fighting for democracy.

"We also share security challenges that demand collective action, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine," Sikorski said, noting that both countries are NATO allies and members of the European Union.

He said the EU's planned new 20th package of sanctions against Russia could prove crucial, and welcomed a decision by EU leaders this week to support Ukraine with a loan guaranteed by the bloc’s common budget, calling it "a step in the right direction."

Sikorski added that he and Rangel discussed "cooperation with the administration of US President Donald Trump," agreeing that strong transatlantic ties and a united NATO are essential to both Europe and the United States.

The two ministers also discussed growing threats to critical infrastructure, including energy cables and pipelines.

Sikorski said they would prepare a joint memo on how to address such threats for consideration by EU foreign ministers.

Separately, Sikorski announced that Poland’s state development bank, Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK), had signed an agreement with Portugal’s Banco Português de Fomento to explore joint financing of infrastructure projects and investment projects in climate protection and innovation.

"I am confident that our entrepreneurs will soon benefit from the cooperation between the two banks," Sikorski said.
