Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that a US-backed peace proposal aimed at ending the war with Russia would freeze the conflict along existing lines of contact, according to media reports.

"In the Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions, the line of troop deployment as of the date of this agreement is de facto recognised as the line of contact," Zelensky said, according to the AFP agency.

He added that further technical details would be addressed at a later stage.

"A working group will convene to determine the redeployment of forces necessary to end the conflict, as well as to define the parameters of potential future special economic zones," he said.

The Ukrainian leader also said he was expecting a response from Moscow to the updated proposals later on Wednesday.

"We are in a situation where the Russians want us to withdraw from the Donetsk region, while the Americans are trying to find a way," Zelensky said.

"They are looking for a demilitarised zone or a free economic zone, meaning a format that could satisfy both sides," he continued.

Zelensky stressed that any plan involving the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from designated areas would require domestic approval.

Any such decision would need to pass a referendum in Ukraine, he said.

Zelensky also addressed the issue of NATO membership. "It is the choice of NATO members whether to have Ukraine or not. Our choice has been made. We moved away from the proposed changes to the Constitution of Ukraine that would have prohibited Ukraine from joining NATO," he said.

The remarks were made during a meeting with journalists on Tuesday but were published on Wednesday.

During the briefing, president Zelensky unveiled the revised 20-point peace plan currently being discussed with the United States.

The agreement, he added, is one of four documents in development as part of a broader package of security and economic measures, including a bilateral security guarantees pact.

In a video published on X on Tuesday, Zelensky stressed: "Ukraine has never been, and will never be, an obstacle to peace."
