“Despite President Trump’s expectations and Ukraine’s willingness to compromise, Russia has once again brutally attacked Kyiv’s residential districts,” Tusk wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Tonight I’ll be speaking with leaders of Ukraine, Germany, France, the UK, Italy, and the European Union about the prospects for peace.”

According to German news agency dpa, the phone call is set to take place Saturday evening and will focus on efforts to end the war in Ukraine, including territorial issues and security guarantees for Kyiv.

The conversation precedes a planned meeting Sunday between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump in Palm Beach, Florida.

Key points in the negotiations remain unresolved. Russia is demanding that Ukrainian forces withdraw from parts of the Donetsk region not currently under occupation, while Kyiv seeks to freeze the front lines at their current positions. The future control of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant also remains under discussion.

Russia launched a large-scale attack on Kyiv early Saturday, using nearly 500 drones and 40 missiles, according to Zelensky. He said energy infrastructure and residential buildings were among the targets.
