The recipients include Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the papal almoner and prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Service of Charity, who has personally delivered humanitarian aid to Ukraine on nine occasions since the start of the Russian invasion.

Most recently, he issued another appeal for urgent assistance in response to the harsh winter and the widespread damage to the country’s energy infrastructure caused by Russian attacks.

The other honourees from Poland are Professor Fryderyk Zoll, a legal scholar and academic who teaches at Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Osnabrück University in Germany, and the Leon Koźmiński Academy in Warsaw.

Another recipient is Leszek Chmiel, chief executive of MOTO-TRUCK, a company based in Kielce, in south-central Poland, which specialises in supplying specialised vehicles, including fire engines.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, he and his son Jakub have been helping to repair vehicle equipment and deliver essential units to the country. Their company also donated a new, fully equipped fire truck to firefighters in Kyiv.

The awards were granted in recognition of significant personal contributions to strengthening international cooperation, supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, engaging in charitable activities, and promoting knowledge of the Ukrainian state worldwide.
