At least 12 people were killed and more than 50 injured in the massive Russian air assault on the Ukrainian capital, according to city officials. Missiles and drones hit residential buildings, and officials warned the death toll could rise as search-and-rescue operations continue.

The worst damage was reported in Kyiv's Podilskyi district, where a Russian missile destroyed several floors of a nine-story apartment building. Two other multistory residential buildings in the same district were also damaged.

City authorities also reported destruction and fires in homes in the Darnytskyi district. Areas outside Kyiv were also affected, including the town of Vyshneve. Train traffic was partially suspended in the Kyiv region.

It was the latest in a series of massive missile-and-drone attacks on Kyiv in recent days. Last Thursday, 30 people were killed and more than 80 wounded in the Ukrainian capital in what was described as the largest attack on the city since the start of the war.

In response to the Russian strikes, Poland's Operational Command of the Armed Forces said fighter jets were scrambled overnight as a precautionary measure. Operations concluded Monday morning, with systems returning to standard activity. "No violations of Polish airspace were recorded", the command said in a statement on X.
