Head of British GCHQ: Russia in a military crisis

Jeremy Fleming, the head of the British intelligence agency GCHQ, has said that Russia is facing an internal and external military crisis.

Speaking to BBC's Radio 4, Fleming assessed the Russian situation as "running short of munitions" and "running short of friends".

He suggested that Putin shows "desperation" in resorting to enlisting prisoners and the untrained.

Fleming saw no sign that Russia was planning to "break convention" and use nuclear weapons, but said that GCHQ was monitoring the situation closely.
