Janusz Szeremeta, nicknamed “Kozak,” and his comrade-in-arms "Krzysztof," both served in the International Legion for the Defence of Ukraine, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
News of their deaths was first reported on Twitter by Mateusz Lachowski, Ukraine war correspondent for Poland’s private broadcaster Polsat News.
Lachowski wrote on Monday: “Two Poles, Janusz Szeremeta, nicknamed “Kozak,” and his colleague Krzysztof from the International Legion, fell on the frontlines yesterday. Let’s honour their memory!”
It was later confirmed by Polish journalist Karolina Baca-Pogorzelska, who maintains regular contact with Poles serving in the International Legion, and on “Kozak”’s official Facebook, according to the PAP news agency.
The news comes after the funeral last week of a Ukrainian man of Polish descent, Viacheslav Kaurkin, who was killed several months ago near the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson.
Kaurkin was buried in his hometown of Zhytomyr, in northwestern Ukraine, after his body was transported from the south following the liberation of parts of the Kherson region, the PAP news agency reported.
Last month, another Ukrainian citizen of Polish descent, Marian Matusz, a resident of the western town of Mostyska, was killed in combat in Ukraine against invading Russian forces.
In July, the mixed martial arts organisation MMA Polska announced that Tomasz Walentek, an amateur MMA fighter from Poland, had been killed in action in Ukraine, after volunteering for the International Legion, the PAP news agency reported.
Tuesday is day 286 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
