The aid will come under NATO’s new Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, the Western military alliance said on Wednesday.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte welcomed the decision as a strong demonstration of Germany’s enduring commitment to Ukraine’s defence, the alliance said on its website.
Rutte said the delivery would help Ukraine defend itself against Russia's ongoing invasion, adding that Germany is the largest European contributor of military aid to Ukraine and that the latest announcement "further underlines its commitment to help the Ukrainian people defend their freedom and sovereignty."
Germany’s contribution under the PURL initiative follows earlier announcements by the Netherlands and a joint pledge from Denmark, Norway and Sweden, according to NATO.
Each package is valued at around USD 500 million, and is designed to meet Ukraine’s most urgent operational requirements with equipment and munitions sourced from US stockpiles, NATO said.
Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.
Thursday is day 1,268 of Russia's war on Ukraine.
