Ukraine’s chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, said the sides working "in the same formats as yesterday: trilateral consultations, working groups, and further coordination of positions."

He said after Wednesday’s meetings in the Emirati capital that the talks were "substantive and productive, focused on concrete steps and practical solutions."

Kirill Dmitriev, an envoy of Russian President Vladimir Putin, said there had been progress and "positive movement forward" in discussions on ending the nearly four-year war, the Reuters news agency reported.

In late January, Dmitriev said Ukraine’s withdrawal from the eastern Donbas region would be the "path to peace," reiterating a longstanding Russian demand as diplomatic efforts to end the war intensified.

Moscow wants Kyiv to pull its troops from all of the Donetsk region, including a line of heavily fortified cities regarded as one of Ukraine's strongest defences, according to Reuters.

Russia controls about 90 percent of the Donbas region, analysts say.

Delegations from Ukraine, Russia and the United States held talks in Abu Dhabi on January 23-24 that focused on territorial issues, including the disputed Donbas region, according to reports.

The meeting marked the first time representatives of all three countries took part in trilateral talks aimed at ending Russia’s war against Ukraine, Poland’s PAP news agency reported.
