Motyka said in a social media post that Poland received a request from Ukraine for "operational support" in the energy sector after the strikes and responded while safeguarding its own electricity system.

“Exports to Ukraine are being carried out while maintaining the safety of the Polish power system,” Motyka said.

He added that Poland’s power transmission system operator PSE was monitoring the situation and remained in contact with its Ukrainian counterpart.

Ukraine’s Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said earlier on Saturday that the attacks hit core components of the country’s energy infrastructure, including major substations and high-voltage transmission lines.

"The strikes targeted substations as well as 750 kV and 330 kV overhead transmission lines that form the backbone of Ukraine’s power system," Shmyhal wrote on X.

He said power generation facilities were also hit, including the Burshtyn and Dobrotvir thermal power plants in western Ukraine.

The Dobrotvir plant is located about 60 km from the Polish border, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Shmyhal said Ukraine had "activated a request for emergency assistance from Poland."

Ukrainian energy company DTEK the latest strikes marked the 10th large-scale attack on its thermal power plants since October.

The company said its facilities have been attacked more than 220 times since Russia launched its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, the PAP news agency reported.
