The day is marked on September 22 every year and encourages motorists not to use their vehicles.

The initiative is part of European Mobility Week, which aims to promote mass transit as an efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to car travel.

This year's European Mobility Week started on September 16, with around 3,000 cities in 50 countries expected to join the effort.

EU Transport Commissioner Adina Vălean was quoted as saying that "a clean, smart and resilient transport system is at the core of our economies and central to people’s lives."
