Poland’s lower-house Speaker Włodzimierz Czarzasty on Monday said he would not support a bid to award the Nobel Peace Prize to US President Donald Trump, arguing that Trump does not deserve the honor.

Czarzasty, a left-wing lawmaker, said he would reject a request to endorse the nomination, which was initiated by US House Speaker Mike Johnson and Israeli Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana.

Correspondence seeking Czarzasty’s backing reached Poland’s lower house on Friday.

Speaking at a news conference in parliament on Monday, Czarzasty said the international order based on the rule of law was being eroded and replaced by power politics.

"Poland has often been the victim of power politics," he said, citing the country’s history when it was under foreign rule for 123 years until the end of World War I and then invaded by Germany and Russia during World War II.

"Poland has often been a victim of power politics," he said, citing the country's history of foreign rule and domination.

He argued that when great powers divide the world into spheres of influence, other states must "close ranks, particularly within the European Union."

Czarzasty said the EU should act as a unified power rather than a bloc of countries separately seeking the favor of a "wealthy US president."

He criticized Washington’s push for what he called "illusory" initiatives, such as the recently launched Board of Peace.

"Instead, we need to strengthen the European Union, the United Nations, the World Health Organization and ourselves," he said.

"President Trump, in my view, destabilizes these organizations, representing a policy of force and conducting transactional politics through the use of force," Czarzasty said, adding that this amounted to violations of principles, values and, in many cases, international law.

He cited Trump’s remarks on history, NATO military missions and what he described as the instrumental treatment of sovereign territories such as Greenland.

"All this means I will not support the Nobel nomination for President Trump because he does not deserve it," Czarzasty said.

He added that the decision reflected his personal position as Speaker, not that of the entire lower house, and said a formal response would be sent later on Monday.

Asked whether his stance could harm Polish-US relations, Czarzasty said parliamentary leaders must take responsibility for their decisions and that he did not expect "any storm."

Turning to transatlantic relations, he said Europe must assume greater responsibility for its own security as US engagement declines.

"We don’t have to choose either the United States or Europe," he said, adding that NATO remains Poland’s security guarantee and the United States an ally.

Czarzasty also said Poland’s security cannot be discussed without Ukraine.

"Ukrainians are fighting for our security. Our enemy is in the east, not the west," he told reporters, referring to Russia.
