Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Czarzasty said his left-wing party is considering new legislation that would make it harder for a simple parliamentary majority to determine Poland's EU membership status.
"If we joined the EU through a referendum, then a referendum should be the minimum form for taking such a direction-setting decision," he said.
Czarzasty warned that forces pushing for a Polish exit from the bloc are growing, naming far-right politician Grzegorz Braun, President Karol Nawrocki and senior Law and Justice (PiS) figures among those he believes favour leaving.
'No question of any Polexit'
The President's Office pushed back, with its chief Zbigniew Bogucki stating there is "no question of any Polexit."
Bogucki said Nawrocki has consistently maintained that Poland's place is in the EU – "but in a Europe of nations," opposed to what he called "forcing illegal migrants upon" the country and the "green madness" being pursued by liberal-left circles.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Sunday that a "Polexit is a real threat today," accusing far-right lawmakers, most of the right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party, and Nawrocki of pursuing it.
