The government estimates that 9.1 million people will be entitled to the additional benefits from November.

President Andrzej Duda said that the extra payouts were delivering on one of his election campaign pledges.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said during a ceremony in which Duda signed the changes into force that the money was intended to make life “a little easier, a little better” for seniors.

The payouts will see pensioners receiving an extra PLN 1,250 (USD 322, EUR 272) a year, though better-off seniors may not get the full amount.

The bonus comes on top of an extra annual payout for OAPs approved by the Polish parliament last year.
