The planes took off shortly after 6 a.m. local time and will transport citizens back to Poland as part of a military contingent established by presidential decree at the request of the prime minister.

"Our priority remains supporting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in ensuring the safe return of Polish citizens," the Operational Command of Poland's Armed Forces said in a post on X.

The evacuation follows a regional crisis triggered when the United States and Israel struck Iran on February 28, killing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior officials.

Iran subsequently launched retaliatory attacks on American military bases in the region, prompting widespread flight cancellations.

In the early hours of Friday, two Polish Air Force planes returned from Oman carrying over 100 nationals requiring medical assistance.
