Mateusz Morawiecki made the declaration at a news conference in Kuźnica, northeastern Poland, after a meeting with officials from the Polish border service, army and police.

The meeting followed events near the Polish village of Usnarz Górny, where a group of migrants from Afghanistan and the Middle East has been stranded "in no man's land," according to some commentators, unable to enter Poland or retreat to Belarus.

According to Poland's Border Guard, a growing number of immigrants have crossed illegally into the country from Belarus during the past few weeks.

'Pawns in Lukashenko's foreign policy'

"The situation we are dealing with is unprecedented," Morawiecki told reporters on Tuesday. "The Lukashenko regime has chosen the boundary with Poland to stage a provocation."

He added that Minsk "is seeking to push Iraqis towards the Polish borderpeople whom Lukashenko plans to use as pawns in his foreign policy."

Morawiecki also argued that the underlying aim of the Belarusian strongman was "to ignite a big migrant crisis across Europe."

Morawiecki told reporters: "Poland is putting a stop to such provocations, such actions. The Lukashenko regime has chosen the wrong border, because the Polish border is and will be well guarded."

He also stated that security was "of paramount importance" to Poland—"security at the borders as well as on the streets."

"And we are doing it all so that Polish people can live, work and learn in peace," he declared.

'All kinds of provocations by Belarus regime'

Morawiecki warned his country had to be prepared for "all kinds of provocations and unheard-of, unusual actions by the Belarus regime."

He thanked border officials and soldiers who had been patrolling the boundary, noting that there were already 1,500 military personnel on the ground, and the number was set to rise to almost 2,000 "in a matter of days."

"Make no mistake, we will do everything to ensure that Poland is a secure country, and that Polish people can live and work in peace, without the risk of huge migrations which our opponents from the East are eager to set off," Morawiecki also said.
