Zbigniew Rau made the remark after a meeting with his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock in Berlin, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
At a joint news conference with the German foreign minister, Rau said: “We are in no doubt that Germany should assume a leading role in building a system of security and protection of peace in Europe - a peace that includes Ukraine but is directed against Russia.”
Referring to Russia’s ongoing assault on Ukraine, Rau added that “Poland has repeatedly warned various German governments against conducting a policy towards Russia that is based on wishful thinking rather than a sober assessment of political processes taking place in Russia.”
Support for Ukraine’s bid to join EU
Poland’s top diplomat stated: “We trust that Germany will undertake such a leading role, helping Ukraine win the war with Russia and finally ushering Ukraine into the European Union.”
Rau voiced hope that Germany would support Ukraine’s bid to be granted EU candidate status as soon as possible.
Addressing his German counterpart, the Polish foreign minister said: “Thank you, Annalena, for your commitment to crafting a clear, strongly morals-based policy.”
Sanctioning Russia, bolstering NATO’s eastern flank
Meanwhile, Baerbock said the way Poland was welcoming refugees from Ukraine was “deeply touching.”
She told reporters she was convinced the EU would soon adopt its sixth package of sanctions against Russia, and added that Germany would seek to strengthen the eastern flank of NATO amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Tuesday was day 90 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
