Marco Buschmann has admitted on Twitter that persisting with the Nord Stream II pipeline - a 1234 km pipeline from Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea - in the face of Russia's invasion of Crimea was a mistake which "contributed to the outbreak of war in Ukraine."

Andrij Melnyk, former Ukrainian ambassador to Germany and currently Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister, thanked Buschmann on Twitter for his "important words". However, he continued that this declaration means little unless Germany goes on to provide Ukraine "with all the arms in the world. For a start."
