“Tonight, Israel took unilateral action against Iran. We are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region,” Rubio said in a statement.

“Iran should not target U.S. interests or personnel.”

Rubio said Israeli officials had told Washington the operation was “necessary for its self-defense.”

Iranian media reported explosions in Tehran after Israel said it had launched strikes early on Friday local time, further inflaming tensions already high since Israel’s war in Gaza began in October 2023.

In retaliation, Iran launched about 100 drones toward Israeli territory, the Israeli military said.

Rubio added that the Trump administration, which has been seeking but not yet securing a new nuclear accord with Tehran, had “taken necessary steps to protect US forces” and was in close contact with regional partners.
