“Ensuring the safety of our citizens is a priority. This decision is linked to the Russian-Belarusian Zapad 2025 exercises and does not mean the border is closed only for the duration of the drills,” the ministry said in an official statement.
The closure is expected to disrupt transport, with operators forced to reroute shipments via Lithuania.
“Due to economic considerations and the welfare of Polish businesses, we will do our best to minimise the impact on entrepreneurs. Losses will be assessed once we know how long the border will remain closed. This overview will guide potential state support for affected industries,” the ministry added.
Ministry spokesperson Karolina Gałecka said that traffic will only resume once authorities confirm that the border is fully secure.
The suspension affects both directions and includes road vehicles and freight trains.
The drills, which began on Friday, included both land operations and naval manoeuvres by Russia’s Baltic and Northern Fleets in the Baltic Sea and the Barents Sea.
