Officials said the move is driven primarily by economic factors and a more stable security situation.

The Bobrowniki - Bierestovitsa and Kuźnica - Bruzgi crossings have been closed for years following security incidents and political tensions with Minsk.

The move responds to pressure from businesses, transport companies, and commuters, restoring the movement of people and goods.

The crossings will operate under the EU’s new entry - exit system, due to be introduced across 29 countries by April 2026, with border officers already trained on the procedures. Initial delays are expected, but the system is designed to strengthen security across the Schengen area.

Deputy Interior Minister Wiesław Szczepański, speaking to Polskie Radio, highlighted the economic benefits of reopening the crossings and noted a recent decline in hostile activity along the border, adding that Poland had consulted Lithuania before making the decision.

The politician also expressed hope that easing restrictions could support diplomatic efforts to secure the release of imprisoned Polish-Belarusian journalist Andrzej Poczobut.
