US lawmaker urges ban on Lavrov ahead of G20 talks

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov should be refused entry to the United States for a G20 meeting in Atlanta, Republican Representative Don Bacon said on Wednesday, after Moscow confirmed he would attend.

Lavrov is due to join fellow G20 foreign ministers on Friday and Saturday, Russia’s foreign ministry said.

Bacon said on X that Lavrov should not be let into the country while Russian President Vladimir Putin wages war on Ukraine and bombs its cities. Russian officials, he said, have no place at such forums: “They lead a pariah state”.

Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen also criticised the visit, saying President Donald Trump should be pressing Putin rather than rolling out the red carpet on US soil for his allies.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio will host the talks, which the State Department said would address geopolitical crises hitting the world economy, including threats to shipping, energy and food security, and supply chains.

The meeting is intended to lay the groundwork for the G20 leaders' summit in Miami, Florida on December 14 and 15. The United States holds the group’s presidency this year.

Poland is taking part in this year’s G20 work as a full member, following an invitation from the United States. President Karol Nawrocki is expected to represent Poland at the leaders' summit.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said last Friday that he had been invited by British Prime Minister Andy Burnham to next year's G20 summit.

Established in 1999, the G20 brings together 19 major economies, the European Union and the African Union. Its members account for around 85 percent of global GDP and more than 75 percent of world trade.
