The survey was carried out in early July by the Polish Development Fund (PFR), a state-owned financial group, and the Polish Economic Institute.

The head the Institute, Piotr Arak, said the study indicated that some optimism had returned among both businesses and employees amid the coronavirus epidemic.

"Employees do not expect layoffs, and employers are not saying that they will lay off staff," he added.

The head of the Polish Development Fund, Paweł Borys, said the results of the study were consistent with economic indicators signalling that April was the month in which the coronavirus crisis dealt the country’s economy the biggest blow.

The European Commission has forecast that the Polish economy will shrink by 4.6 percent this year amid the coronavirus pandemic, the smallest contraction in the EU.
