New research by Dun & Bradstreet Poland, cited by the daily Rzeczpospolita, shows that around 10 shops a day are closing across the country, especially groceries, clothing stores and furniture outlets.
In the first half of 2025, the total number of retail locations fell by more than 0.5% compared to the end of 2024, shrinking to about 365,200 outlets.
New data show the steepest declines are hitting clothing and footwear shops, drugstores, car parts retailers, second-hand stores, computer outlets and toy shops.
According to Dun & Bradstreet Poland, the number of shops fell in 18 of 28 tracked sectors, while some categories, like greengrocers, bakeries and liquor stores, saw modest growth.
The report also found that small wholesalers and sole proprietorships are under the most financial strain, with about 41,200 such businesses carrying over half of the retail sector’s total debt of 2.4 billion PLN (576 million EUR).
