Polish state-owned rail operator PKP Intercity set a summer passenger record at 26 million, driven by strong city links, seaside routes and demand for the new Adriatic Express to Croatia, the Infrastructure Ministry said.

PKP Intercity carried an average of 283,000 passengers a day during the holidays, with August reaching 9.5 million—the best month in the company’s history, according to the ministry.

Operations scaled up to an average of 514 trains daily, 60 more than a year earlier. The operator reinforced 3,889 services by adding a total of 5,909 cars, and on 60 occasions ran double sets of Pendolino, Flirt and Dart trains.

The international Adriatic Express to Rijeka proved the season’s hit, drawing 9,300 travelers. The ministry said the Croatia service will return next year. Most journeys were between major cities and to popular resorts including Kołobrzeg, Świnoujście, Władysławowo, Hel and Zakopane.

PKP Intercity, described as Poland’s largest rail operator, connects big cities and tourist centers domestically and offers travel across Europe. Its four train categories include budget TLK and InterCity (IC) services and express Express InterCity (EIC) and Express InterCity Premium (EIP, Pendolino) services.

The company carried 78.5 million passengers last year, up 15% from the previous year and 33% from 2022. It estimates 88 million passengers in 2025 and 110 million in 2030.
