Onet noted that Hołownia, who stepped down last weekend as head of the Poland 2050 movement, intends to leave domestic politics after twice losing presidential elections, including a disastrous 2025 campaign in which he received just 4.99% of the vote. In November, under a 2023 coalition deal, he is also due to hand over the Sejm speaker’s post to Left party leader Włodzimierz Czarzasty, after failing to renegotiate his mandate.

According to the outlet, Hołownia has for several months pursued the UN role in Geneva — a move requiring support from Poland’s authorities, including the president. It added that this explains his recent outreach to Karol Nawrocki and Jarosław Kaczyński, both influential figures in the right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party.

In a statement on social media, Hołownia confirmed he applied on Friday in the public recruitment process launched by UN Secretary-General António Guterres. He noted that no Polish citizen has ever held the post, while acknowledging his own chances were slim.

List do wszystkich, z którymi od sześciu lat idziemy drogą Polski 2050. I tak, będzie długo, ale przecież dzięki temu...

Onet estimated that the job could bring Hołownia a net salary of around $14,200 a month — more than double his current earnings as Sejm speaker.
