Polish President Karol Nawrocki and Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda attended the opening ceremony of a new section in Kalvarija, Lithuania, on Monday, 20 October 2025.

Via Baltica is one of Europe’s key transport corridors, linking Warsaw, Kaunas and Vilnius, and continuing north through Latvia and Estonia to Finland.

The road is built to expressway standards in Poland and motorway standards in Lithuania.

The stretch also holds strategic military importance, running through the Suwałki Gap - a narrow stretch of land between Poland and Lithuania seen as a vital corridor for NATO troop movements.

Last week, Polish government spokesperson Adam Szłapka said the Polish section of Via Baltica spans 310 km.

The modern route runs from Warsaw to the Polish-Lithuanian border at Budzisko and connects Poland with Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
