The proposal was adopted by the European Parliament’s transport and defence committees, with Polish MEP Dariusz Joński of the Civic Coalition serving as a shadow rapporteur.
The plan allocates more than €17.5bn for modernising key transport routes, including roads, bridges and strategic connections to ports and airports essential for reinforcing NATO’s eastern flank.
Joński welcomed the outcome, noting that an amendment identifying Poland as a pivotal state for eastern-flank security had been retained.
“Military mobility in Poland is essential for the security of the entire eastern flank. I am very pleased that the Polish amendment has been included in the report on the so-called ‘military Schengen’. It will allow for the efficient transfer of troops and heavy equipment from the West to Eastern Europe,” the politician said via social media.
According to Beata Płomecka, Brussels correspondent for Polish Radio, the vote significantly boosts Poland’s leverage in forthcoming budget talks. She reported on Sunday that European Commission projections foresee Poland securing the biggest allocation.
