Speaking to reporters on Thursday, he said the purchase had been authorised by the US Congress and that Poland is the only country besides the United States with access to the AMRAAM-D variant.
"We have unanimously confirmed the purchase of the newest AIM-120 AMRAAM-D radar-guided air-to-air missiles for F-35 aircraft," Kosiniak-Kamysz told a news conference after a meeting with officials from the defence, economy and finance ministries.
"Only the United States and Poland will initially have access to these missiles," he added.
Kosiniak-Kamysz said Poland must finalise the deal by December 10, adding that financing would not be a problem.
He described the acquisition as part of the country’s largest-ever military modernisation effort, with several procurement contracts signed each week.
Poland is expected to receive its first F-35 jets from the United States next year.
The air force is scheduled to acquire 32 of the stealth fighters, which, together with upgraded F-16s, will form the backbone of its future combat fleet, state news agency PAP reported.
The US Department of State in May approved the sale to Poland of 400 AIM-120D3 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM), along with associated equipment and logistics support, at an estimated cost of USD 1.33 billion, according to the Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency.
The AIM-120D3, manufactured by US defence contractor Raytheon in Tucson, Arizona, is the most modern version of the US-made, medium-range, radar-guided missile, the PAP news agency reported.
