Thousands of families will receive funding for mortgages in Poland every year under a new programme being developed by the country's ruling conservatives, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has announced.

He made the announcement as he briefed reporters on an initiative called "A Home Without a Down Payment," which is part of the government's flagship package of socioeconomic policies collectively known as the Polish New Deal.

Under the new housing initiative, the government plans to guarantee mortgages issued by banks that join the programme by signing an agreement with state-owned development bank BGK, according to officials.

"The family is the cornerstone and mainstay of our society," Morawiecki told reporters this week.

"Families require our help through social and family policies that must be bold and prudent," he added.

The new housing programme is intended for married couples of up to 40 years of age and could support as many as 80,000 families a year, Morawiecki told a news conference.

The amount of funding will depend on the number of offspring, he added, with PLN 20,000 for a two-child family, PLN 60,000 for a three-child family, and PLN 20,000 for every next child.

The initiative is "addressed to the hundreds of thousands of families who may wish to expand their mortgage-financed homes," Morawiecki said.

"This programme seeks to help realise the dreams of millions of Polish families and deal with the perennial problem of not enough dwellings," he added.

He also told reporters that his government can afford the programme and that "a comprehensive bill" would be drawn up with details of the plan over the next several weeks.
