Autumn is a period of increased activity for bears. They are looking for food to prepare for a harsh winter.
A Tatra National Park representative said that every bear chooses a different time to hibernate “depending on the temperature and the availability of food.” The bears in the higher Tatra mountains are usually hibernating earlier than those in the Bieszczady region, due to lower temperatures and snowfall.
The park ranger also added that bears draw a lot of attention from tourists, as they are often visible in close proximity to popular trails and mountain huts.
Brown bears are the largest mammals living in the Tatra Mountains and are under strict protection in Poland. They usually hibernate from November to March.
Adults weigh around 300 kg and live up to 50 years.
