The head of Poland’s National Security Bureau, Sławomir Cenckiewicz, has announced plans to sue journalists who reported that he concealed the use of psychotropic drugs, which led to the temporary revocation of his security clearance.

Sławomir Cenckiewicz, who serves under President Karol Nawrocki, is taking legal action against the authors of a report published in Monday’s edition of Gazeta Wyborcza.

The report claimed that Cenckiewicz lost access to classified information after failing to declare the use of certain prescription medications in a 2020 security questionnaire.

Did Poland's national security chief lie about his medication?

According to the newspaper, one of the medications was classified as psychotropic, while another had psychoactive properties that could be dangerous in the case of an overdose.

In 2024, Poland’s Security Clearance Authority (SKA) revoked Cenckiewicz’s clearance, a decision critical for his role as head of the National Security Bureau.

The Warsaw Administrative Court overturned the ruling in June, but the Prime Minister's Office appealed the decision to the Administrative Court.

Medical associations condemn disclosure of sensitive health information

The report drew criticism from the Polish Chamber of Physicians (NIL) and the Association of Resident Doctors (OZZL), who emphasised that medical information is highly sensitive and should never be publicly disclosed.

They called on state authorities to investigate the source of the disclosure and urged media outlets to exercise caution, warning that such reporting can violate patients’ rights, undermine public trust in healthcare, and contribute to the stigmatization of people with health conditions.

Siemoniak denies intelligence leak and criticizes Cenckiewicz

Tomasz Siemoniak, coordinator of Poland’s special services from the Civic Coalition, denied that the information came from intelligence agencies.

He said Cenckiewicz had mistaken widespread public and institutional discussion of his security clearance issues for an intelligence leak.

Siemoniak added that since December 2023, no agency has released personnel files or staged media appearances during detentions – practices he said were used under previous right-wing PiS governments.
