“Does the state treat women as citizens and patients, or merely as tools for political and ideological purposes?” asked Jędrzejko, who is based in Tychy, southern Poland.

The doctor’s letter was prompted by recent remarks from President Nawrocki, supported by the right-wing populist Law and Justice (PiS) party, praising Roman Dmowski, a leading figure in Poland’s early 20th-century nationalist movement.

While acknowledging Dmowski’s historical role in shaping Poland’s borders, Jędrzejko highlighted the darker aspects of his ideology: ethnic nationalism, exclusionary policies, and the subordination of individual rights - particularly women’s - to the interests of the nation.

Drawing on more than two decades of experience working with women in hospitals and clinics, Jędrzejko warned that these ideas continue to have real-world consequences.

Jędrzejko cited systemic issues in Polish healthcare, including restrictions on reproductive rights, limited access to contraception and sexual education, and moralistic treatment of patients, which he sees as reflecting remnants of Dmowski’s worldview.

The doctor urged the president to consider whether the state treats women as autonomous citizens and patients or merely as tools for political and ideological ends.

He stressed that history should serve as a guide for reflection and responsibility, not as a convenient myth to justify current political narratives.
