Meanwhile, more than 39 percent of those surveyed by pollster IBRIS last month voiced the opposite view, according to the businessinsider.com.pl website.

Under current rules, the wife of the Polish president does not get paid although she is expected to give up all other employment.

Polish lawmakers at the end of last week approved legislation under which the first lady could soon start receiving a monthly salary for her role in the administration.

Under the measure, the salaries of the most important people in the state would be increased substantially and linked to the remuneration of Supreme Court judges.

The bill also introduces a salary for the first lady, who would earn 90 percent of the base salary of a Supreme Court judge, or almost PLN 18,000 (EUR 4,100, USD 4,850) a month at current pay scales.

The proposal now goes to the upper house of Poland's parliament, the Senate, for further debate.

Poland's First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda has kept a busy schedule of official functions and domestic and international visits since she took on the role more than five years ago, presidential aides have said.
