The second seeds saved two championship points to beat the top seeds, Colombian duo Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah, 7-6(6), 6-7(4), 11-9.

Melo was quoted by the atptour.com website as saying: “Me and Kubot are happy to win this title in Acapulco. This title means a lot to us.”

He added: “We were able to put our best tennis together. The match was very tough and it was decided by one or two points.”

Kubot and Melo were in 2017 named the men’s doubles team of the year by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
