Ski jumping: Poland's Stoch finishes 17th in first leg of Four Hills Tournament

Poland's Olympic champion Kamil Stoch came 17th in the opening event of the 2023/24 ski jumping Four Hills Tournament in Oberstdorf on Friday, his best finish so far this season, while Dawid Kubacki and Piotr Żyła also made the top 30.

The 2023/24 Four Hills Tournament began at the Schattenberg ski jump in Oberstdorf, Germany, on Friday night, according to news outlets.

Poland's Stoch, who won the Four Hills competition in 2017, 2018 and 2021, came 24th in the first round after jumping 117m.

The three-time Olympic champion leapfrogged into 17th in the final round, his season's best so far, thanks to a jump of 133m, the skijumping.pl website reported.

Dawid Kubacki, who finished runner-up in the prestigious Four Hills Tournament last year, came 27th in Oberstdorf on Friday, with jumps of 112m and 130m.

Piotr Żyła finished 28th with jumps of 113m and 132.5m, 1.3 points behind Kubacki.

Meanwhile, Germany's Andreas Wellinger won the Oberstdorf event in front of 25,500 spectators, thanks to jumps of 139.5m and 128m.

Japan's Ryoyu Kobayashi scooped second place (134.5m, 129m), with Austria's Stefan Kraft coming third (132.5m, 125m), skijumping.pl reported.

The 2023/24 Four Hills Tournament now moves to the German resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen for the New Year's Day event at the Olympic ski jump.

The annual competition then moves to Austria, for events in Innsbruck on January 3 and Bischofshofen on January 6, according to officials.
