Soprano Joanna Freszel and mezzo-soprano Nora Gubisch are the soloists, and the orchestra’s music director Andrzej Boreyko will appear on the conductor’s podium.

The concert will be repeated on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference on the eve of the opening concert, Boreyko said that the highlights of the orchestra's 2022/23 season include performances by pianist Evgeny Kissin in Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto, and by violinist Julia Fischer in The Violin Concerto by Polish composer Mieczysław Karłowicz.

“Fisher is learning the Karłowicz concerto specially for us, her intention being to perform it worldwide," Boreyko said. "This would be great as the best way to promote the less well-known Polish music is to have it performed by world-calibre soloists."

He also singled out a concert marking the 75th birthday of American pianist Garrick Ohlsson, and one featuring works by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki and son Mikołaj Górecki.

Ukrainian music also figures prominently in the season’s programming. The National Ukrainian Symphony Orchestra is due to perform works by Ukrainian composers Maxim Berezovsky and Yevhen Stankovych, with Volodymyr Sirenko conducting.

The repertoire of the Warsaw Philharmonic for the coming months includes works by such Ukrainian composers as Victoria Poleva, Boris Latoshinsky and Valentin Silvestrov.
