Directed by Paweł Pawlikowski, with Joanna Kulig and Tomasz Kot in the leads, Cold War premiered at the Cannes Festival in 2018 and subsequently received three nominations at the Academy Awards.
A love story between people of different backgrounds and temperaments, set against the backdrop of the Cold War in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the film scenario has been adapted for the stage by Irish playwright Conor McPherson. The direction is in the hands of Almeida’s artistic director Rupert Goold, while Anya Chalotra, known for the lead role in TV fantasy drama The Witcher, will appear as the main female protagonist and Luke Thallon as her pianist lover.
The production is to feature traditional Polish songs and choral works, as well as original music written by Grammy Award-winner Elvis Costello.
Almeida Theatre describes Cold War on its website as “a compelling story of passion, redemption, and the journey to be free”.
The production is to run between November and January.
